6. “Pinned Wings”
If you’re begging for the write off, here it is:
I can’t waste any more time on this.
I owe you a thank you and a goodbye;
But I really must get on with life.
Thanks for the coffee and for opening my eyes–
For the violent revolution of butterflies.
Thanks for keeping a secret, if not always your word
And, for a time, lessening this burden I’ve shouldered.
So long it seems I’ve been running blindly,
Tunneling through life
With barely air to breathe or light to see
Frantic–but numb–
The grooves of the maze rubbed
To become trenches dug–
Graves of yesterday’s mistakes
I’ve yet to fully regret.
But I must confess
That despite all my insistence this never’d be more,
I’d have taken one more chance before
Someday comes and you turn around
To find I haven’t followed.
Retrace your steps to find the place you saw me last
But I’m gone, with what’s left of our past.
This time you’ve wasted fabricating lies
I would’ve embraced, and I tried.
But you pinned the wings of butterflies.
