12. “Yellow Lines”
What if I wasn’t everything
You’re not allowed to love?
Would you give in, breakdown,
Lay it on the line?
Would you hold me longer
Than it takes to say goodbye?
Or would you be another reason
To move on with life?
Some haunting tribute you provide
To let regrets eat away inside
Thanks for that.
Did I forget to show my gratitude?
Here it is–here’s to you!
So this is your ‘thankyou;’
This your sad goodbye.
As roads open up before you
And I watch from behind
Standing still, contemplating
Endless yellow lines.
It’s been a different life I’ve led
But now with end in sight
My vision’s blurred; I have no words–
We knew it wasn’t right.
I feel I’m about to leave my world behind
Last call, last shots, hug and say goodbyes.
But it’s you who’s poised to take a step
To take it all in with moment left.
So this is your thank you,
This your sad goodbye
As roads open up before you
And I watch from behind
Standing still, contemplating
Endless yellow lines.
It’s a formal write off
So let me get it all out:
Every taste I’ve ever had of you
Was painfully bittersweet.
But thank you for being the one
To make a move when all I could do
Was stand still.
You moved me, set me spinning,
Eyes open and dizzy;
I’m not sure I’ll laugh when I fall,
But oh it felt good for awhile!
So this is your thank you
This your sad goodbye
As roads open up before you
And I watch from behind
I’m standing still,
Contemplating
Endless yellow lines
